International Day for Midwives is observed every year on 5 May.
The theme of International Day 2021 for Midwives: “Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives”
WHO declared the year 2020 as ‘Year of Nurse and Midwife’ to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.
Florence Nightingale is considered to be the father of the modern nursing movement.
Florence Nightingale, an icon of mercy and service, is famous as “The Lady with the Lamp”.
Sarojini Naidu, the first female governor of India (Uttar Pradesh), is known as the ‘Nightingale of India’.


Prafulla Chandra Pant became the acting chairman of the National Human Rights Commission

President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Uttarakhand-origin judge Prafulla Chandra Pant, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), as the acting chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.
The post of Speaker has been vacant since former Chief Justice of India Justice HL Dattu completed his term on December 2, 2020.

Odisha Government Launches ‘Gopabandhu Sambadika Health Insurance Scheme’

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched ‘Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana’, a health insurance scheme for journalists.
CM Patnaik has declared journalists of the state as ‘Frontline Covid Warriors’.
This scheme provides health insurance of 2 lakhs annually to all working journalists of the state.
The scheme was operated by the Odisha state government from 1 June 2018.
The scheme is named after Gopabandhu Das.
He was a popular reformer, social activist, journalist, political activist, essayist and poet in Odisha.
He started a magazine called “Satyavadi”.


GST revenue reached an all-time high of Rs 1.41 lakh crore in April

India’s GST (Goods and Services Tax) collection reached an all-time high of Rs 1.41 lakh crore in April 2021.
Which is 14% higher than the March GST collections of Rs 1.23 lakh crore.
This indicates a steady improvement in the state of the economy.

GST is an indirect tax which was implemented on 1 July 2017 across India.

Goldman Sachs slashed India’s GDP growth forecast by 11.1% and Barclays by 10%

New York-based global investment bank Goldman Sachs lowered India’s GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal year 2021-22 from 11.7% to 11.1%.

UK-based global brokerage firm Barclays lowered its forecast for FY 2021-22 from 11% to 10%.
In addition, Barclays forecasts a contraction of 7.6% of the economy in FY21.

Indian Army set up first Green solar energy harnessing plant in Sikkim

The Indian Army inaugurated the first green solar power harness plant in North Sikkim at an altitude of 16,000 feet to harness renewable energy for its troops.
The plant, built in collaboration with IIT Mumbai, has a capacity of 56 KVA and uses vanadium-based battery technology.
Vanadium is a chemical element with a symbol (V).
In January 2021, Vanadium was discovered in the Tamang and Depo areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
This was the first discovery of Vanadium in India.
The largest reserves of vanadium are in China, followed by Russia and South Africa respectively.
Its atomic number is 23.


Mamta Banerjee sworn in as CM of West Bengal for the third time in a row

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on May 5 for the third consecutive time.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mamata Banerjee at the Rajya Bhavan.
The remaining members of the Cabinet and the Council of Ministers will be sworn in on May 9, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
TMC won 213 out of 292 assembly seats in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2021.
At the same time, BJP has won 77 seats.
Mamta Banerjee will head her office ‘Nabanna’, where she will be given the Guard of Honor by Kolkata Police.

Former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee passed away

Former Attorney General of the country Soli Sorabjee has died at the age of 91.
Soli Sorabjee was previously the Attorney General from 1989 to 1990 and then from 1998 to 2004.
He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan Award in March 2002 for freedom of speech and protection of human rights.

RBI imposes fine of ₹ 3 crore on ICICI Bank
