National Technology Day: 11 May
Every year National Technology Day is celebrated on 11 May across the country.
On 11 May 1998, India conducted three successful nuclear tests at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan under ‘Operation Shakti’.
The code name for the first phase of Operation Shakti was “Smiling Buddha”. It was held in May 1974.
The second nuclear test, the second phase of Operation Shakti, conducted in 1998, was also called Pokhran II and was a series of 5 tests of atomic bombs.
It was headed by the late President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
After this successful test, the then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India as a full nuclear state.
National Technology Day was celebrated for the first time on 11 May 1999.

On May 11, India’s first indigenous aircraft, the ‘Hansa-3’, took off and DRDO (Defense Research Development Organization) tested the surface-to-air ‘Trishul’ missile.
Approval of emergency use of DRDO drug 2-DG for treatment of corona
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the emergency use of the anti-COVID drug manufactured by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the treatment of corona.
This drug is named 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG).
The institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a laboratory of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in collaboration with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, created the drug.

Arena Sabalenka won the Madrid Open women’s singles title
World number seven Elena Sabalenka of Belarus has won the 10th title of her career in the Madrid Open Women’s Singles 2021 by beating world number – 1 women’s tennis player Ashley Barty of Australia.
In the men’s singles final of the tournament, world number six Alexander Zverev (Germany) won the title for the second time by defeating number nine player Matteo Berretini (Italy).

British racing driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won the Spanish Grand Prix held on 09 May 2021.
This is Lewis Hamilton’s fifth consecutive Spanish Grand Prix win.

Olympic Gold Medal Winner Hockey Player Ravinder Pal Singh passed away
Former hockey player of the Indian hockey team and Moscow Olympics 1980 gold medalist Ravinder Pal Singh passed away of Corona infection.
He played the Junior World Cup in 1979 and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Apart from two Olympics, Ravinder Pal Singh also played the Champions Trophy, 1982 World Cup and 1982 Asia Cup in 1980 and 1983.
Nepali climber Kami Rita conquers Mount Everest for the 25th time
Nepal’s 52-year-old climber Kami Rita Sherpa broke her own record of climbing the world’s highest peak Mount Everest the most times (for the 25th time).
He reached Mount Everest for the 24th time in 2019.
Kami first climbed Mount Everest in May 1994.
Mount Everest Height: 8,848.86 m.
In Nepal, it is known as Sagarmatha (meaning Heaven’s top).
In Tibet it is known as Chomolangma (Queen of Mountains).
Anupam Kher wins Best Actor Award at New York City International Film Festival
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has won the Best Actor Award at the New York City International Film Festival (NYCIFF) for the short film ‘Happy Birthday’.
At the same time, the film also won the Best Short Film Award at this prestigious International Film Festival.
The film is directed by Prasad Kadam.
Odisha government announces ‘Manoj Das International Literature’ award every year
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced that the state government will confer the ‘Manoj Das International Literature Award’ in memory of eminent litterateur Manoj Das.
The award will be given to Odisha litterateurs every year for their creative contribution to English literature.
Also, a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh will be given.
In addition, to generate interest among school children for creative writing in English and Odia language, the Chief Minister announced the ‘Manoj Kishore Sahitya Pratibha Samman’, an annual literature award for high school students.
The award will be given for writing in both Odia and English languages and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each.
Manoj Das was a great writer of Odia and English.
He died in Puducherry on 2 April 2021 at the age of 87.
In the year 2000, Manoj Das was awarded the Saraswati Samman.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of literature and education.
Himachal Pradesh launches ‘‘Parvat Dhara Yojana‘
The Government of Himachal Pradesh has started the ‘Parvat Dhara Yojana’ for augmentation of water sources and increase in ground water.
This scheme is being implemented by the Forest Department in the forest areas after spending Rs. 20 crores.
This scheme is being implemented in the remaining districts except Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts in the state, in which the Jal Shakti Department is functioning as the nodal department.
