The scheme was launched in Ranchi, Jharkhand on 23 September 2018 as the second component of Ayushman Bharat. It was launched by PM Narendra Modi. The scheme provides a cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization in private and public listed hospitals of the country.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NDTL and NIPER Guwahati was signed in August 2020, which proposes to synthesize 20 rarely available reference material (RM) over a period of 3 years.
This reference material (RM) has been recognized by NDTL as one of the rarely available RM globally and is used to strengthen anti-doping measures in laboratories accredited in all World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Will go.
