Bengali New Year: 15 April
The Bengali New Year is celebrated on 15 April. It is the first day of the Bengali New Year.
This festival is also called Poila Baisakh or Nobo Borsho i.e. New Year.
On this day, Mughal ruler Akbar started the Bangla calendar in the 15th century and since then this day is considered as the first day of the new year.
The celebration was declared as a cultural heritage of humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2016.
Country’s new Chief Election Commissioner: Sushil Chandra
The current Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra has been appointed as the 24th Chief Election Commissioner by President Ram Nath Kovind.
This term of his will last till 14 May 2022.
He will replace the current Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora.
The Election Commission headed by Sushil Chandra will conduct assembly elections in Manipur, Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Election Commissioner of India is the head of the Election Commission of India and is responsible for conducting nation and state elections in India freely and fairly.
The Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by the President.
The term of the Chief Election Commissioner is 6 years or 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.

FIFA suspended Pakistan and Chad Football Federation
The Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) has suspended the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) and the Chadian Football Association (FTFA).
FIFA has taken this decision due to the interference of any other party between the Pakistan Football Federation and FIFA.
If any third party interferes between FIFA and the Board, it is strictly against the rules of FIFA.

Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation issued the first ‘green bond’ in the country
Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation of Uttar Pradesh has become the first Municipal Corporation to issue Green Bonds.
The Municipal Corporation raised an amount of Rs 150 crore through the Green Bond route.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Wins ‘ICC Player Of The Month’ Award
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has won the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of March by Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
For the third time in a row, the Indian player has received this award.
In the women’s category, New Zealand’s player, Liegel Karr, has been given this award.
Since January 2021, the ICC has started awarding the Player of the Month Award to one male and one female player for performing the best every month.

The Academic Ranking of Global Universities (ARWU) 2020 has been released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
According to this ranking, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bangalore) has topped the Best Higher Education Institutes in India.
While the University of Calcutta has been ranked the best university in India.
IISc Bangalore is ranked in the 501-600 category.

Sixth edition of Raisina Dialogue Conference begins
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the sixth edition of Raisina Samvad on 13 April.
This conference to be conducted through online medium will run from 13 to 16 April.
150 speakers from a total of 50 countries and multilateral organizations will participate in the Raisina Dialogue.
The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Friedrichsen will also join as chief guests.
The Raisina Dialogue is an annual conference to discuss geopolitical and geo-economic issues, organized jointly by the Ministry of External Affairs of India and the ORF.
The Raisina Dialogue was first held in the year 2016.
The theme of Raisina Dialogue 2021 is “#ViralWorld: Outbreaks, Outliers and Out of Control.”
Famous shooting coach Sanjay Chakraborty passed away
India’s prestigious shooting coach Sanjay Chakraborty, who was awarded the Dronacharya Award, died due to Kovid-19.
He trained some of the illustrious Indian shooters including Olympic medalists Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, Anjali Bhagwat and Suma Shirur, Deepali Deshpande, Anuja Jung and Ayonika Paul.
Inauguration of Khelo India Center of Excellence and Water Sports Academy
The Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Mr. Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the Khelo India State Center of Excellence (KISCE) for sailing at the Jammu Kashmir Sports Council Water Sports Academy in Dal Lake, Srinagar.
The center is one of the two KISCEs in Jammu and Kashmir.
One of these is the Maulana Azad Stadium, built for the Talwar Baji competitions in Jammu.
